Lionfish Hunter

Since arriving via the Suez Canal, the lionfish has become one of the most damaging invasive species in the Mediterranean, including along Lebanon's coast. It has almost no natural predators here, reproduces quickly, and hunts native reef fish populations with a voracious efficiency that local ecosystems never evolved to handle. Divers are, increasingly, part of the solution.

The Lionfish Hunter specialty teaches certified divers to identify lionfish confidently, understand their venomous spines and how to avoid a sting while handling capture tools safely, and remove them from a reef using proper containment equipment rather than improvised methods that put you or the reef at risk.

Training covers species identification versus similar-looking natives, safe approach and capture technique using a pole spear or containment device, correct handling and storage of a caught lionfish to avoid envenomation, and basic first-response steps for a lionfish sting, which is painful but rarely dangerous when handled correctly.

This is not a course about collecting a trophy. It is about diving with a purpose beyond sightseeing: every lionfish safely removed from a Lebanese reef is one fewer predator working through the native fish population that the rest of the ecosystem, and the rest of your diving, depends on.
